Multipack cereal boxes
Multipack cereal boxes group several cartons of the same cereal into one unit with one barcode and one price, held by an outer carton, a carrier, a sleeve or a tray. The multipack is a new product as far as the till is concerned, so it needs its own structure, its own barcode and a way of being carried. We design the outer around the packs you already have.

A multipack raises the amount bought in a single visit without changing the product. Three cartons in one carrier cost the brand a little extra packaging and move three times the cereal. For the shopper it is a better price and one fewer thing to remember; for the retailer it is a higher-value line from the same pallet space.
The packaging has two jobs: hold the packs together through distribution and a walk to the car, and make the bundle scan and read as one item. Where the packs inside are different flavours, the format becomes a variety pack, which is specified differently.

Die-cut into the top or formed from a folded panel. Reinforced, because it carries every pack at once.
Four ways to hold packs together.
The right outer depends on the count, the weight and the channel. A band or sleeve is lightest; a fully enclosed outer is strongest; a tray with film sits between. Sleeve-style bundles are described under cereal sleeve boxes.

Choose an option to update the specification. The outer carries the weight of every pack, so grades run heavier than a single carton; see cereal packaging materials.

About multipack cereal boxes
What a multipack cereal box is
A multipack is a selling unit made of several individual packs of the same product, joined by secondary packaging. For cereal that means two or more cartons, or a set of mini cartons, held in an outer carton, an open carrier, a sleeve or band, or a tray with film. The individual packs keep their own inner bags and closures.
The multipack is distinct from a shipping case, which groups packs for transport and is opened in store. A multipack goes home with the shopper intact. It is one of the grouped formats in our custom cereal packaging range.
Best uses
Multipacks suit products people buy repeatedly: staple flakes, kids cereals, oats, and portion packs. They are used for multibuy promotions, for the higher counts expected in club store cereal packaging, and for online orders where a single shippable unit is more efficient than loose cartons.
They are also the usual retail format for minis. A mini cereal box cannot hold a shelf position alone, so six or eight are sold together. Multipacks are less suited to new products, where asking for a multiple purchase is a barrier.
Structure and closures
Four structures cover most needs. A band or sleeve wraps the middle of two or three cartons; it uses the least material. An open-fronted carrier, often with a handle, shows the packs and adds carrying strength. A fully enclosed outer protects best and suits shipping. A tray with shrink or stretch film is economical for minis and large counts.
Whichever is used, the packs must not slide out. End tabs, a front lip, a tight fit or film provide retention. If dividers are needed to stop packs rubbing, see cereal box inserts. A perforated opening on enclosed outers lets the shopper open it without scissors.
Material options
The outer carries the weight of everything inside, usually by a handle, so material is chosen for tear and burst strength. E-flute corrugated is the common choice for carriers and enclosed outers. Heavy paperboard works for two or three light cartons. Kraft is preferred for bands because its fibres resist tearing.
Film-wrapped trays use the least board but add plastic, which some retailers and brands now avoid. An all-board solution, with tabs or a lid in place of film, is usually possible; see plastic-free cereal packaging.
Printing and finishing
An open-fronted outer lets the cartons' own printing do the selling, so the outer needs only one or two colours: the count, the offer and the brand. That keeps cost down. An enclosed outer hides the cartons and needs fuller artwork, printed offset on paperboard or litho-laminated onto corrugated.
Digital printing suits short promotional runs where the outer changes with each offer. Finishes are rarely needed on corrugated outers. Options are shown under printing methods for cereal packaging.
Size considerations
The outer is sized from the grouped packs, measured filled. Cartons bow slightly when full, and three side by side are wider than three times the nominal depth. We prefer to measure real packs. The arrangement, side by side or front to back, is chosen for how the unit will stand on shelf and how it will be carried.
Check the shelf. A three-pack is deep, and many shelves cannot take it front-facing. Check the weight as well: a comfortable carry weight limits the count of large cartons. Individual pack sizes are covered in the cereal box dimensions guide.
Retail considerations
Barcodes are the detail that most often goes wrong. The multipack needs its own code on the outer, and the codes on the inner packs must not be scannable, or the till may charge for one carton. They are hidden by the outer, turned inward, or the inner packs are marked as not for individual sale.
Unit pricing rules in many markets require the price per weight to be shown, so the total weight must be stated on the outer. For display-ready trays that hold multipacks on shelf, see shelf-ready cereal packaging.
Artwork tips
Use our dieline for the outer. State the count and total weight clearly on the front. Place the unit barcode on the outer where it scans easily, and plan how the inner barcodes are concealed. Keep 3mm bleed on paperboard and 5mm safety on corrugated.
With an open front, check that the cut-away frames the cartons' key artwork and does not crop a logo. Leave space around the handle. The artwork preparation guide has file checks. When you have the inner pack and the count, request a multipack quote.
Send three of your cartons. We will build the outer around them.
Post filled packs, or their exact dimensions and weight, and we will recommend a multipack format, draw the outer to fit and send a plain sample to load and carry.
