Custom kraft cereal boxes
Custom kraft cereal boxes are made from unbleached paperboard, left its natural brown, with the fibre visible on the surface. The board signals natural and small-batch before a word is read, and it is stronger for its thickness than most white boards. It also prints differently: colours sit darker and softer on brown, so artwork has to be designed for the material instead of adapted to it.
Brown kraft cereal boxes: a natural surface with real shelf presence.
On a shelf of glossy white cartons, a brown one stands out by doing less. The material carries the message: unbleached, plain, close to its source. For a cereal whose appeal is its ingredients, that is the right first impression, which is why kraft is so common on organic cereal boxes and granola.
It is not only a look. Kraft pulp keeps its long fibres, so the board resists tearing and holds a fold well. The cost is in print: brown board absorbs light, so bright colours and photographs lose their punch. A design that accepts that, with few colours and strong shapes, looks better than a full-colour layout fighting the board.
Six things that differ on a kraft paper cereal carton.
Select a point on the carton, or read the list.
Uncoated and slightly rough. Ink sinks in a little, giving a matte, soft-edged result with no glare.
Any structure, cut from brown board.
Kraft is a material choice, not a carton style. It runs through the same dies and gluers as white board and can be made into any structure we offer. It is especially good on tuck-end cartons, where its fold strength shows; see straight tuck end cereal boxes.

About custom kraft cereal boxes
What a kraft cereal box is
A kraft cereal box is a folding carton made from unbleached kraft paperboard. Kraft is a pulping process that keeps wood fibres long and strong; when the pulp is not bleached, the board stays brown. The result is a stiff, tear-resistant board with a natural surface, used uncoated or with a light coating.
The same carton structures are available in kraft as in any other board. What changes is appearance and print behaviour. It is one of the material options across our custom cereal box range, alongside white and recycled boards.
Best uses
Kraft suits brands whose positioning is natural, organic, wholegrain or artisan: granola boxes, muesli, oats and ancient-grain cereals. It suits small producers too, because a one- or two-colour kraft carton looks intentional where the same print on white might look unfinished. Ink choice is part of that story; see vegetable-ink printed cereal boxes.
It is less suited to products sold on bright colour and photography, such as children's cereals, where white board performs better. For those, a white-top kraft gives a printable white face with a brown interior, a useful middle route.
Structure and closures
Kraft's long fibres make it forgiving at folds and tough at stress points. Tuck flaps survive repeated opening, handles and hang tabs resist tearing, and auto-lock bases fold flat without cracking at the diagonals. That is why it is often specified for auto-lock bottom cereal boxes carrying dense fills.
Die-cut features look good in kraft because the edge matches the face. A window cut in a kraft panel shows a neat brown edge; see window cereal boxes. Uncoated kraft also glues easily, with no coating to remove from the glue flaps.
Material options
There are three practical variants. Uncoated kraft is brown on both sides and has the most natural look. Coated kraft has a thin clay coating that smooths the surface for finer print while staying brown. White-top kraft has a white coated face on a brown back, for full-colour printing with a kraft interior. Suitability for food contact depends on the grade and the liner; see food-grade cereal cartons.
Typical calipers are 16 to 20pt. Because kraft is stiffer than white board of the same thickness, a carton can sometimes run a step lighter. Kraft can be made from virgin or recycled fibre; if recycled content matters to you, see recycled cereal boxes. The two boards are compared in kraft vs SBS for cereal cartons.
Printing and finishing
Design in spot colours. Dark, saturated inks, such as black, deep reds, greens and navy, hold well on brown. Pale and bright colours shift. Photographs lose contrast. Where a bright colour or a true white is needed, an opaque white is printed first, as a shape of its own or as an underlay beneath the other inks.
Most kraft cartons are left uncoated, which is the point of the material. An aqueous coat adds rub resistance without much change in look. Foil stamping and embossing are particularly effective, since metal and relief contrast strongly with a matte fibre surface. Options are shown under finishes for cereal cartons.
Size considerations
Sizing is the same as for any carton: fill weight, bulk density, bag size and headspace. Granola and muesli, the usual kraft products, are dense, so cartons are smaller for a given weight than a flake cereal would need. A carton proportioned for flakes will look half empty with granola in it.
Kraft's stiffness helps on tall or wide panels, which resist bowing better than in white board of equal caliper. For how dimensions are worked out, see custom size cereal boxes.
Retail considerations
Kraft reads clearly at a distance as a category signal, and that is its retail value. The risk is sameness: in a natural-foods aisle, many packs are brown. Differentiate with a strong colour block, a distinctive shape or a foil detail, not by adding more print.
Uncoated kraft marks more easily than laminated board. Grease, water and scuffing show, so packs handled heavily benefit from an aqueous coat. Barcodes print well in black on kraft, but check contrast if the board is dark; a white panel behind the code removes any doubt.
Artwork tips
Set up artwork with spot colours and a separate white-ink layer where white is wanted. Do not rely on screen previews; ask for a proof on kraft. Avoid small reversed-out text, which fills in on an absorbent surface, and avoid large areas of pale tint.
Keep 3mm bleed and 4mm safety. Let the board show: unprinted kraft is a design element, and the best layouts use it as their background. Our artwork preparation guide covers file set-up. When you are ready, request a kraft carton quote.
See your colours on kraft before you commit.
Brown board changes every colour printed on it. We will send printed kraft swatches showing common inks with and without a white base, so you can choose your palette from the real material.
