Inside printed cereal boxes

Inside printed cereal boxes carry artwork on the inner face of the board as well as the outside, so opening the pack reveals a colour, a pattern, a message or a game. It turns the largest unused surface on a carton into something the customer sees every morning. It also brings ink closer to the food, so board, inks and layout have to be chosen with that in mind. This page covers how it is printed, what it is used for, and how the inside is kept safe and legible.

Why print the inside

Double sided printed cereal boxes use the surface nobody sells.

The outside of a cereal box works for a few seconds in a shop. The inside is in front of the customer every time the box is opened, often for a week or more. On most cartons it is bare grey or white board. Printing it adds a second moment: a flash of colour, a thank-you, a recipe, a puzzle on the back of the back panel.

It also makes a pack feel finished. A carton that is as considered inside as out is read as higher quality, which is why it is common on subscription and direct-to-consumer cereal. See cereal subscription boxes for that channel.

Structure

Two print passes on one sheet, kept in register.

The sheet is printed on one face, then turned and printed on the other, before cutting. The two sides have to line up with each other and with the die. Structures that open wide show the inside best, such as straight tuck end cereal boxes with a full-width top flap.

What an inside printed cereal box is

Carton board has two faces. Normally only the outer face is printed and the inner face is left as it comes from the mill. An inside printed cereal box has ink on both. The inner print can be as little as one line on the top flap or as much as a full-colour design across every inside surface.

It is also called two-sided, double-sided or interior printing. It is a print option, independent of structure, and is offered on any carton in our custom cereal carton selection. The sheet goes through the press twice, or once through a press that prints both sides.

Best uses

The strongest uses are those where the customer opens the pack at home with some attention: subscriptions, online orders, gift sets and premium lines. Children's cereals have a long tradition of games and cut-outs on the inside back panel; see kids cereal boxes. Promotions use the inside for codes and competition details that should not be visible in the shop.

It adds less to a value-line carton that is opened, emptied and thrown away without a glance. If the budget is limited, printing only the inside of the top flap gives most of the effect for a fraction of the ink.

Structure and closures

Think about what is actually visible. In a bagged cereal carton, the inner bag hides most of the inside walls until the box is nearly empty. The top flaps, the upper part of the walls and, once flattened, the back panel are what the customer sees. Designs should concentrate there.

Orientation is the usual mistake. The inside of a flap is upside down relative to the outside when the carton is flat. Text must be set so that it reads correctly when the flap is lifted. A folded two-sided proof is the only reliable check. For closures that open wide, see reverse tuck end cereal boxes.

Material options

The inner face decides the print quality. C2S board, coated on both sides, prints as sharply inside as out. C1S board is uncoated inside, so ink sinks in and looks softer and slightly duller, which suits simple one-colour work. Coated recycled board has a grey back, on which only dark colours read well.

Kraft is brown on both faces and takes a one-colour interior print with a natural look. For bright interior colour on a recycled or kraft base, a white-lined or two-side-coated grade is needed; grades are compared under cardboard cereal boxes.

Inks, coatings and the food side

The inside of a carton faces the product. In most cereal packs an inner bag sits between the two and acts as the barrier, but the inks and coatings on the inside are still chosen for that position: low-migration ink systems and suitable coatings, with heavy coverage avoided where the bag is thin. Requirements depend on the market and the bag; see food-grade cereal boxes.

Cartons packed without a bag should not have ordinary print on food-contact surfaces. The inside is normally left with a light coating or none, since film lamination on both faces makes gluing and folding harder. Ink options are described under soy ink printed cereal boxes.

Size considerations

Size sets how much inside space there is to use. A family-size back panel will hold a full game or a recipe set. A mini carton has room for a few words on the flap and little else.

The two sides of the sheet cannot be registered to each other as tightly as colours on one side. Allow a few millimetres of tolerance: avoid inside designs that must align exactly with a cut edge, and let inside solids bleed generously past the folds.

Retail considerations

Nothing that the law requires on the label may be placed only on the inside. Ingredients, allergens, nutrition, dates and business details must be readable on the closed pack. The inside is for extras.

Promotional mechanics printed inside, such as codes, are hidden until purchase, which is useful. Check the retailer's rules on promotions and on on-pack recycling advice, which is often repeated inside. Heavy inside coverage on solid dark colours can show through thin uncoated boards, so the outside is checked with the inside printed.

Artwork tips

We supply two dielines: the outside view and a mirrored inside view. Design the inside on the mirrored one, and mark which way is up on each flap. Keep ink and coating out of the marked glue areas.

Keep inside text at least 4mm from scores and cuts, and bleed solids 3mm or more. Ask for a folded two-sided proof and open it as a customer would before approving. Files are covered in the artwork preparation guide, and layout in how cereal box dielines work. Then request an inside-printed carton quote.
