Foil stamped cereal boxes

Foil stamped cereal boxes carry a thin layer of metallic or pigmented foil pressed into the board with a heated die. The result is a true mirror shine that no printing ink can match, used for logos, borders, seals and seasonal details. Foil is not the only route to metallic: cold foil and metallised board do related jobs at different costs. This page compares them and sets out the artwork rules that keep foil edges clean.

Why add foil

Gold foil cereal boxes signal value in one glance.

Metallic ink is paint with metal flakes in it. Foil is an actual metallised layer, flat and continuous, so it reflects like a mirror. On a shelf of printed cartons it is the one surface that flashes as a shopper walks past. People read it as premium before they have read a word.

Used with restraint, it lifts a whole pack: a wordmark, a medal, a thin rule. Used everywhere, it stops looking special and starts looking busy. It is most effective on a quiet matte ground; see matte and soft-touch cereal boxes.

Anatomy

Six things that decide a hot foil cereal packaging result.

Select a point on the carton, or read the list.

Hot foil is pressed with a metal die made for the design. Its cost is fixed, so it weighs more on short runs.

Structure

Stamped on the flat sheet, in its own pass.

Foil is added after printing and lamination and before die-cutting. It suits any structure, and is common on gift formats such as tray and lid cereal boxes, where the lid gives a large, flat stamping area.

What a foil stamped cereal box is

Foil stamping transfers a very thin metallic or coloured layer from a carrier film onto the carton, using a heated metal die and pressure. Where the die touches, the foil sticks. Everywhere else it lifts away with the carrier. The foil sits on top of the print and any laminate.

A foil stamped cereal box is a printed carton with one or more stamped details. Gold and silver are the most used, but foils come in copper, rose, colours, white, black, clear gloss and patterned types. The option is available on any pack in our custom cereal carton collection.

Best uses

Foil does most for packs that need to say premium quickly: gift sets, luxury cereal boxes, seasonal editions and top-tier ranges. A small foil detail can also separate a brand's premium line from its core line while the rest of the design stays the same.

It is poor value on high-volume, low-margin lines, where the cost is hard to recover, and on the smallest formats, where there is little room for it. It should not carry essential information, since reflective text can be hard to read at some angles.

Structure and closures

Foil is applied to the flat sheet, so structure is not a limit. Position is. Foil laid across a score can crack when folded, and foil on a glue flap stops the adhesive bonding. Both are avoided at layout. Foil near a cut edge is kept back a couple of millimetres so the knife does not lift it.

Large flat faces take foil best. Lids, sleeves and the front panels of tuck cartons are ideal. For a foil band that wraps a pack, see sleeve cereal boxes.

Material options

Smooth coated boards give the cleanest foil. SBS is the first choice. Coated recycled board works well, especially under a matte film, which gives the foil an even surface to bond to. Foil can be stamped over matte and soft-touch laminates, though some soft-touch films need a compatible foil grade.

Uncoated kraft takes foil with a slightly broken, rustic edge; bold shapes work and fine detail does not. When the whole pack should be metallic, metallised board is used: a silver-surfaced board that is printed over with transparent inks to give coloured metallics, with opaque white under any area that should not shine.

Hot foil, cold foil and metallised board

Hot foil gives the brightest, sharpest result and can be combined with embossing in one hit, so the foil is raised as well as shiny; see embossed cereal boxes. It needs a metal die and a separate pass. Cold foil is applied on the printing press with a UV adhesive. It handles fine halftones and large areas and can be overprinted with colour, but is slightly less bright.

Metallised board suits designs that are mostly metallic. Rainbow and patterned foils are a subject in themselves; see holographic cereal boxes. Foil pairs naturally with spot gloss, kept slightly apart; see spot UV cereal boxes.

Size considerations

Die cost is fixed, so foil is proportionally cheaper on larger runs and larger packs. The stamped area also affects price: a logo costs less to run than a full border. On a mini pack, one small foil mark is usually the limit that makes sense.

Several foil details spread across a sheet can share one pass if they are the same colour. Two foil colours mean two passes. Planning the design around a single foil colour keeps the cost down.

Retail considerations

Foil is durable but not scratch-proof. Cartons are interleaved or packed so foiled faces do not rub. On shelf, foil catches directional light best; under flat lighting it reads as a pale metallic colour, so it should support the design and not be the only thing holding it together.

A barcode must never be foiled or sit on a reflective area. Recycling is a common question: the foil layer on a stamped carton is extremely thin and such cartons are generally accepted in paper recycling, but rules vary. Metallised board is laminated with a film or foil layer and is treated differently in some regions. See sustainable cereal packaging.

Artwork tips

Supply foil as a separate vector layer in solid 100% black, at final size and position. Keep positive lines at least about 0.3mm and reversed-out lines at least about 0.5mm. Avoid very small type; set foil text in a medium or bold weight.

Do not design foil to butt exactly against a printed edge. Either overlap it onto the print or leave a clear gap, so normal registration movement is invisible. Keep foil 2mm from scores and cuts. Our artwork preparation guide covers file set-up. Then request a foil carton quote.

Foil stamped cereal boxes: common questions

Hot foil is pressed on with a heated metal die, as a separate step. Cold foil is applied on the printing press with adhesive. Hot foil is brighter; cold foil handles fine detail and large areas.
