White cereal boxes
White cereal boxes are made from SBS, a paperboard bleached white through its whole thickness and coated for print. It is the board to choose when colour has to be exact, when the pack will be embossed or foiled, or when the box should be as white inside as out. It costs more than recycled board, and on the right product it is visibly worth it.
SBS cereal boxes: when the colour has to be right.
Ink is transparent. Every printed colour is the ink plus whatever is underneath it. On a board that is slightly grey or cream, pale colours shift and whites are only as white as the board. SBS is the brightest and most neutral base available, so a brand colour prints as specified and a photograph keeps its highlights.
The whiteness runs through the board. A die-cut edge, a window, an embossed logo and the inside of the carton are all white. That consistency is what makes a pack feel finished, and it is why SBS is the usual board for luxury cereal boxes. Where budget leads, coated recycled board gets close for less; see cereal boxes in coated cardboard.

A smooth clay-coated surface. It holds fine detail, small type and even solids.
The same carton, on a better sheet.
SBS runs through the same process as any paperboard and can be made into any structure. It is at its best where edges and folds are on show: tuck-end cartons, windows and shaped packs. See die cut cereal boxes.

About white cereal boxes
What a white SBS cereal box is
A white cereal box, in the material sense, is a carton made from solid bleached sulfate board, SBS. The board is made entirely from bleached chemical wood pulp, so it is white from face to back with no grey or cream layer in the middle. One or both sides carry a smooth clay coating for printing.
The phrase 'white cereal boxes' is also used for plain, unprinted cartons; those are covered under blank, unprinted cereal boxes. This page is about the board. SBS is the premium grade within our custom cereal box range.
Best uses
Choose SBS when print quality is part of what is being sold: premium and gift cereals, brands with a precise colour identity, minimalist designs with large areas of bare white, and packs with embossing or foil. It is also the safe choice for products sensitive to odour, since virgin bleached fibre is very neutral.
For mainstream, price-led lines the extra cost is harder to justify, and coated recycled board is the normal choice. For natural positioning, brown board says more; see brown kraft cereal boxes. The comparison is drawn out in kraft vs SBS for cereal cartons.
Structure and closures
SBS folds well. Its fibres are long and evenly distributed, so scores are sharp and resist cracking, including under dark, heavy ink. That makes it dependable on tuck flaps, reclose tabs and any closure that is flexed repeatedly.
Edges are where it stands apart. On a window cereal box the aperture shows a white edge instead of a grey one. On a tuck-end carton, the visible flap edges are white. For shaped packs, where much more edge is on show, SBS is close to essential.
Material options
SBS is supplied coated one side, C1S, or two sides, C2S. C1S is standard: a coated print face and an uncoated white back, which is the inside of the carton and glues well. C2S is used when the inside is printed; see inside printed cereal boxes.
Calipers for cereal run from about 14pt for minis to 24pt for large packs. SBS is denser than some other boards, so it is a little heavier for a given thickness. Fibre sourcing certification is available from many mills; it should be claimed on pack only where the certificate chain is in place.
Printing and finishing
This is the board printers proof on, because it shows colour as intended. Brand colours are best run as Pantone spots for consistency between runs; see Pantone printed cereal boxes. Photographic work in CMYK keeps its highlight detail. Fine type and thin lines hold cleanly on the coated surface. Solid dark designs also start on white board; see black cereal box printing.
Every finish performs well: matte and gloss lamination, soft touch, spot UV, foil and emboss. Embossing in particular is deeper and crisper than on recycled board, whose shorter fibres crack sooner. Finishes are described under finishes for cereal cartons.
Size considerations
Sizing follows the fill, as for any carton. With SBS, panel flatness is good at moderate sizes; very large panels still need a heavier caliper or a film laminate for stiffness. If a brand wants a substantial, rigid feel in the hand, stepping up to 24pt gives it without changing structure.
Because SBS costs more per sheet, efficient layout matters. Small changes in dimensions can improve how many blanks fit a sheet and offset some of the premium. This is covered under custom size cereal boxes.
Retail considerations
A bright white pack stands out among coloured ones, and it photographs well for online listings. White also shows dirt. Unlaminated white board scuffs and marks in distribution, so a matte or gloss laminate, or at least an aqueous coat, is advisable on packs with large unprinted areas.
At home, the white interior is noticed. It is a small signal, but on a premium product it supports the price. Recyclability is the same as for other paperboard.
Artwork tips
Use our dieline with 3mm bleed and 4mm safety. Specify brand colours as Pantone references. If the design relies on unprinted white, say so, and protect it with a laminate. Large pale tints print evenly on SBS, but ask for a proof if the tint is critical.
For embossing and foil, supply separate vector layers and keep them clear of scores. Our artwork preparation guide covers the file set-up. When your design is taking shape, request a white SBS carton quote.
